004. Krabi & Koh
We’re water people now, I think. The last two days in Krabi and the first part of our time on Koh Lanta has been spent on, in or under the sea. Ferries, long tail boats, snorkels, speedboats, kayaks, swimming. Four jellyfish stings between us and counting, though we met a nice man on a bus that used to own a Scuba School in Jamaica, who has explained all the jellies to us (which ones to consider stinging nettles, and which ones to swim very quickly in the opposite direction from, crucially). Water people now.
Krabi Town was a nice little spot, so much quieter than anywhere we’d been before, and we settled into a good routine of morning work, daytime trip, evening work, calls, dinner and a walk around to find something sweet for pudding. Special mentions to 50 baht Pad Thai for dinners and Sprucy Coffee House for becoming temporary Big Sister Projects HQ.
Our hotel in Krabi Town was owned and run by the nicest Chinese Auntie, so Ke got to bust out his Mandarin too, which was fun. Yesterday I made friends with some little French kids who were hunting for fish in the shallows, so languages - it turns out - are super useful wherever you are.
One of our trips took us to the Phi Phi Islands (wow wow wow), made famous by Leo and The Beach, amongst other things. We’ve also visited Ko Tup, Ko Mor, Chicken Island, Ko Poda, and Phra Nang Cave Beach. The trips are a bit nuts; like grown up school trips - you get a sticker, or a wristband to make sure you don’t get lost or mislaid, and you just get ushered from place to place and told in no uncertain terms what to do.
“You go toilet now!”, “Relax now on beach, one hour”, “Snorkel here, 20 minutes”, “This place for photos” etc. They’re never wrong, we’ve learnt. You should absolutely be going to the toilet now, snorkelling here, and whipping out your phone when they say.
A conveyor belt of tourists moved with dazzling efficiency from spot to spot. It’s a well-honed routine and these guys and girls are professionals.
We’re on Koh Lanta now and staying until Saturday, before starting our journey back North to Kevin & Becky’s Island (Ko Phayam), via Krabi and Ranong.
Island life for the foreseeable ✌️.
